Helping Family Members With Early Stage Dementia Cope With Memory Problems

Filed under: Health and Fitness — admin May 27, 2008 @ 1:03 am

When a loved one begins showing early symptoms of dementia, there are many issues relating to independence, safety, and the individual’s sense of self with which to cope. As dementia progresses, the person may have to give up living on his or her own, but during the earliest stages a supportive family network and helpful memory aids can help them retain their independence for a bit longer.

Is It Dementia or Normal Aging?

Most people begin to show signs of memory loss after the age of seventy. This is normal, due to aging, and typically short-term in nature (where did I put my keys?). It is not particularly dangerous, although it can be inconvenient. However, rapid or more pervasive memory loss may indicate dementia and should always be confirmed by a physician.
More adult children and grandchildren every year are coping with parents or grandparents suffering from dementia and memory loss. With three generations of living family, many individuals can live independently for longer stretches of time, providing family members are willing to pull together and make it work.

How Families Can Help

Jogging the memory can be as simple as using the right tools. If your parents or grandparents forget whether they have taken their medication each day or whether they have a doctor’s appointment, visual aids can be a huge help. Pill cases designed to divide medication into daily doses will help them determine whether they’ve taken their prescriptions. Investing in an oversized calendar and making sure they write down their appointments will also help keep them on track.

Likewise, the phone can be a lifeline, but telephone numbers are easy to forget as a person ages. Even numbers programmed to speed dial can get confusing as dementia progresses. Invest in a phone with oversized keypads and program in important numbers. Then label each key with a picture of each person. If the person wants to call her son, all she will have to do is push the key with his photo.

If you find the above solutions helpful, you can apply these types of organizational techniques to other areas, as well. A key rack mounted near the front door with oversized key tags that are labeled will simplify life. Does your grandfather tend to forget to put on a jacket when he goes outside? Put a coat hook next to the door, too- if he sees it, he is more likely to put in on than if it is out of sight. You can also encourage your parents or grandparents to write down as much as possible. The benefits are two-fold: the act of writing something down reinforces the memory and sticking a bulletin on a board or refrigerator creates a visual aid.

Computer Problems Tips - The 3 Levels of Spyware - Do You Still Control Your Computer?

Filed under: Computer and Technology — admin May 22, 2008 @ 1:00 am

"The only difference between the fool, and the criminal who attacks a system is that the fool attacks unpredictably and on a broader front." (Tom Gilb)

It doesn’t matter if your computer is compromised by professional villains or just by the geeky kid across the street, once your sensitive files have been broken into your life may never be the same. Spyware is one of the most unrated forms of "espionage" occurring in the world today.

Most computer users think of this kind of program as a being just as an annoying or embarrassing kind of prank. But criminal-minded programmers know better.

In the past, spyware and its close cousin adware were simply wicked bits of "paid advertisements" for shady website publishers to attract customers. But soon, more malicious coders determined to use these programs to really "spy" on innocent people and dig out as many of their victim’s secrets to use or sell on the black market as possible.

These new programs are being crafted by "professional" development teams just like a "real" software company. The programs are sophisticated and slick.

At its most innocent level, these spy packages just track your browsing habits (where you go and what you do on the web). Your email addresses are also raided. This information is then sold to websites for advertising.

At an intermediate level, a "keystroke" logger (a program that observes and records what you type on your keyboard) can be used in combination with web-tracking software to dig out the keywords, passwords and usernames you use when visiting sites such as eBay, PayPal and your bank.

The final level is in which spyware has completely overwhelmed your computer and all your sensitive information is laid-bare to any prying eyes that want to view it. Your ID/SSN numbers, your home address, personal photographs, your banking or other financial information is dug out and sold to the highest bidder.

This is then used to create everything from fake driver’s licenses for teenagers, terrorists, and illegals to making dupe credit cards used to run up charges under your name. Your "identity" has been stolen and compromised for years to come.

Your computer can be turned into a "zombie" and thousands and thousands of fake emails could be sent through your connection to the Internet. This will result in your ISP (Internet Service Provider) taking action and limiting or shutting down your account. And with unpaid charges bouncing about your credit card report will soon be in a shambles as well.

The Value of Being Certified

The Value of Being Certified
Microsoft certifications is a valuable skill and will be a great "sure hire" feature on your resume. To be able to strongly market yourself as a Microsoft instruction, certification is a must. You will not only standout in this field, but you will be highly sought after by potential employers. In the event that you are looking to independently contract out your skills as a Microsoft instruction and rising above the other competition, being certified is the way to go.

Tips to Get Started on Your Certification
• Shop around for classes being offered, either online classes, if you are not taking an online class than classes offered preferably close to you, classes that are not too expensive and are small class sizes.
• Try to enroll in classes where the instructors are highly skilled themselves in Microsoft software.
• Choose classes that are not too difficult and that will cover the topic and areas in which you are interested.
• It is a plus if you choose classes that offer practice exams.
• Schedule your classes at a time that you will not be tired, stressed or overall stretching yourself. You want to be prepared and alert.v
• Be sure that the classes that you take will give you the all around skills you will need to take and pass the exam.

You have to shop around. Just because an institution that offers these types of classes has a reputable name or their classes have a high price tag, does not necessarily mean they have the best and most knowledgeable instructors.
Once you find classes that offer all or most of these attributes, then you should have the ability to function well in the classroom, absorb all there is to learn and smoothly and without many difficulties ace your test.

Sainsbury’s Home Insurance Is Warning Gardeners And Homeowners

"It’s great news that so many of us are good-intentioned when it comes to planting trees, but it’s important that we don’t put our properties at unnecessary risk of subsidence," said Neil Laird, Sainsbury’s Home Insurance manager. "Our advice is to do your homework before putting spade to soil."

The British supermarket giant released information on its corporate site, indicating that close to 9.7 million plan to plant trees in their garden this year, and may be completely unaware of the risk of subsidence. The key, according to the report, is not only pick an appropriate kind of tree for the size of the garden, but also to ensure that trees are planted an adequate distance away from any building or property. The report indicated further, as an example, that a maple tree should be planted at least 9 to 12 meters away from one’s home or property.

The corporate site provided analysis of industry data, suggesting that insurance providers in the UK may have paid out an average of £710,000 a day for subsidence claims over the past five years. Sainsbury’s Home Insurance alone has attributed 12% of the money they’ve paid out to subsidence and other vegetation. Evidence suggests that trees such as leylandii and willows are more likely to cause subsidence.

"Planting trees is not only a commendable act in today’s environmental climate; a well thought out garden can also add significant value to your property," adds Laird. "However, people intending to plant a tree in their garden this year should be very careful about which type of tree they plant and how far away from the property they plant it. For example, our research shows that over 1.1 million people intend to plant a willow tree, which is a cause for concern given that this type of tree shouldn’t really be planted any closer than 18 meters away from your property to avoid risk of subsidence damage."

Lower Back Pain and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Filed under: Health and Fitness — admin May 18, 2008 @ 1:05 am

Is there a correlation between lower back pain and Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Researchers have long argued that IBS may be caused by abnormal functioning of the nerves and muscles of the bowel. No indication or explanation is ever given as to why this malfunction might occur. To my knowledge there has been no adequate evidence to support this assumption. More over, I have not seen, heard of or read about any studies which were specifically implemented to test this hypothesis. Because of my own observations about my own IBS symptoms, I am inclined to believe and support this hypothesis.

Some of us who suffer Irritable Bowel Syndrome have tried for many years, without success, to eliminate the often debilitating affects of this mysterious disorder. Generally those who suffer have spent a great deal of time and money, having test after test only to be told that nothing conclusive was found.

Often after years of diagnostic procedures and expensive studies, patients are told there was nothing wrong with them. Their complaint of symptoms are brushed off as imaginary or more properly put in medical terms, psychosomatic. But with the ever increasing number of patients complaining of the same generalized list of symptoms, the medical community has been forced, in at least a small part, to acknowledge the malady as something more then imaginary symptoms of hypochondria.

So what can we surmise about IBS? It is a condition or disease in and of itself? Or is IBS is a condition caused by or a symptom of some other physical, neurological or possibly even psychological problem that is as yet undetected or undiagnosed as being relative to the IBS condition? I find this to be a more plausible conclusion and will provide some insight for my personal belief that IBS is a secondary condition rather then a condition unto itself.

For years doctors have proposed the secondary condition concept in relation to Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Unfortunately, they have not yet been able to successfully document any evidence to conclusively say what might be the root cause of IBS. Moreover, I believe there is not just one cause, but several causes, all with the same secondary symptoms, which make up what is termed as IBS.

Please don’t think that it is my intent to say the IBS condition is not real, or the symptomology is psychosomatic in nature. I know from painful experience the condition and symptoms of IBS are very real. I also would venture to say because of the sheer number of reported cases, the medical community had been forced to re-evaluate their approach while dealing with patients with complaints of Irritable Bowel Syndrome-like symptoms. I am merely going to express what I personally have concluded about another possible causation for IBS which may be overlooked by the medical profession.

I would like to also toss up for consideration that IBS, with its list of many symptoms, may be a traceable progression of symptoms stemming from a single causation. I believe, in my case, this is a very valid assumption. I have as yet been unable to get any physician to agree with me, at least to the point of taking up the position on the record.

Before going any further, I think it would be a good idea to review a partial list of Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms. IBS may be characterized by a combination of any or all of the following symptoms:

Four Reasons Why You Must Consider Bulk Printing Your Ads

Be seen everywhere. If you have to avail bulk printing services just to be able to advertise a lot, do so. Each day offers your business many avenues to promote. Make sure to grab each opportunity. Be always ready.

The Advantages of Bulk Printing

This type of service will not only produce a lot of materials. It will also force you to think of ways on how you can distribute the bulk to as may people as possible.

Although you may think at first that this will not be effective because you may end up with a lot of stock of the same materials, you can change that. But how do you make this type of printing work to your advantage?

1. Strike while the iron is hot. You have tons of the same material. You have based its design and ad copies on the current trend. You must give the materials out to your target market while the trend still appeals to them.

And one thing more, your competitors are also using ways like you do to come up with their own ads. It is inevitable that sometimes, there are elements in your ads that are similar. You don’t want them beating you with your own concept. So give those out as soon as you have the materials.

2. The printing cost will be less expensive when the materials are processed in bulk. It will be easier to transact with the right printing company online. This way, the process will be easier while everything stays transparent.

You will know easily how much the project will cost you. You will be able to choose the types of paper for your materials. You will be able to be the boss regarding the design. This method is safe as long as you stay in the hands of the right company.

3. With so many materials in you, you will be forced to think of ways on how to distribute such tools in style. Instead of handing out flyers to people, why don’t you try contracting a local newspaper publication to have your flyers as inserts on their papers?

Leave your glossy brochures or catalogs in places where your target market frequents. Make sure that you just don’t leave your materials, but you must make the area so interesting that people will be prompted to pick your tools.

4. When you are easily seen everywhere, word of mouth will be a lot possible. For example, if your loyal client sees your ad and that client is with a friend. The former can get your tool and suggest your products to the latter while giving positive testimonials about your services.
